Placing posts directly on top of rocks is a traditional method of construction which protects wood against moisture and termites, and also helps structures absorb impacts from earthquakes.
However, scribing the natural contours of rock onto wood for a perfect fit is a time consuming endeavor. The modern standard of ‘stick it in concrete’ is definitely the more efficient route. But there is an undeniable beauty in buildings born from natural materials, and a sensibility which anyone can appreciate.
